Do you have a question about the services House of Language offers? You might find answers below. If your question isn't answered here, don't hesitate to ask your speech pathologist!

If you feel that your child is behind their peers, they may have a speech and/or language delay. This can include others having difficulty understanding what your child says, your child having difficulty remembering new things and/or following directions, or difficulty learning to read and write.

You can look at some language milestones for different ages to see if your child is struggling in these areas. Otherwise, if you feel you're having difficulty with your own speech or understanding, you may be a good candidate for speech therapy.

Depending on the age of the individual, assessments may include the following:

0–3 years: Play-based assessment that includes parent report. The child is assessed through play.

3–5 years: Preschoolers are typically assessed using a standardised assessment involving pointing and speaking tasks. If the child finds these too difficult, the therapist may use a play-based assessment instead.

5 years and up: Assessment may involve the person's speech, language, voice, fluency and literacy skills, changed based on the areas of concern expressed when the appointment is made.

We are more than happy for you to sit in and watch your child's/relative's speech therapy session. By observing what happens, you're able to follow up on these skills at home using the same techniques as your therapist.

Alternatively, you're welcome to sit out of the session if you feel this is more suitable, and come in towards the end to recap what occurred.

Most of our clients attend therapy on a weekly basis depending on their needs. We can also prescribe homework so that what's learned in therapy can be generalised to everyday environments. Evidence shows the more consistently a person attends therapy, the quicker they will improve.

The length of therapy depends on several factors: the severity of the communication impairment, the ability of a person to learn new skills and remember them in different contexts, and whether follow-up work occurs outside the session.

There's no way to conclude how long therapy will take for each person. At House of Language, we aim to improve an individual's communication impairment as soon as we can, to limit any impact on their ability to communicate with others.

Telehealth involves consulting your speech pathologist remotely via video calling software. Telehealth services can include diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

Telehealth has played a critical role in ensuring the continuity of care for hundreds of thousands of Australian patients - allowing you to get the care you need, where and when you need it.
